An ingenious admittance system ensures the new free bicycle parking facility Stadserf in Almelo is only accessible to cyclists.

The bicycle parking facility is located in a closed part of a parking garage and accommodates three hundred bicycles. The admittance system uses not only security cameras but also a laser system to verify whether someone is accompanied by a bicycle. Only then will the turnstile provide access to the parking facility. By another turnstile the parking facility may be left without a bicycle. At that point the visitor will receive a ticket allowing entry to collect the bicycle later. The system has been provided by Skidata and is the first of its kind in the Netherlands. Outlay for the covered bicycle parking facility was approximately 400.000 Euro.
