Brussels tests shared traffic lights for pedestrians and cyclists

At two crossings in Brussels, shared pedestrian-cyclist traffic lights are being tested. The Brussels region wishes to determine if this measure will enhance the safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

The immediate reason for the trial is that the traffic light for cyclists must be placed at the beginning of the crossing while the pedestrian light is placed at the far end. This results in confusion, especially in situations where cyclists and pedestrians must make the crossing next to each other but at different moments. The Belgian Institute for Traffic Safety will study the new situation, to determine the effect of these lights on the behaviour of users, on traffic conflicts, and on the readability of the lights.
The test will be carried out using the combined symbols on one traffic lamp (cyclist and pedestrian displayed together) and a positive evaluation should lead to a proposal to amend Belgian legislation and apply it elsewhere.
