Brussels wants to double the percentage of cycling

Approximately 5 per cent of all trips in Brussels occur by bicycle. That number needs to double by 2015 and will be as high as 20 per cent by 2020, if Brussels local authorities are to be believed.

Those are the targets for the new bicycle plan for the Brussels region which will be attained, according to the plan, by expanding infrastructure, realising better bicycle parking facilities and investing in education and promotion.
Although the percentage of cycling is still relatively low in Brussels, it has been increasing of late by approximately 13% annually, and last year even by 16%. Brussels authorities reveal in this plan their ambition to give priority to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport in constructing and reconstructing roads and public spaces. Moreover, roads where cycling is allowed will be redesigned in such a way that cycling is actually feasible as well.
Meanwhile the Brussels rental bike project, Villo, has some 22,000 subscribers, who account for a 15 per cent share among cyclists. Distributed over 163 stations there are currently 2500 bicycles, a number which may double in the nearby future – depending on the results of an evaluation.
