The European Commission has made five million Euro available for plans benefiting the quality of life in inner cities. Bike measures feature prominently on the wish list.

In the Call for proposals TREN/SUB 02-2008 of the European Commission proposals are solicited to promote the development of sustainable mobility in urban areas. The emphasis is on plans to promote walking and cycling at the expense of car use. In addition projects will be considered that limit goods transport in cities or stimulate public transport. Proposals aimed at communication and awareness will be considered for an EU contribution as well. The five million will be distributed over various projects.
The Commission suggests one million Euro per project. Partners will have to shoulder a maximum of 50% of the costs themselves. Local authorities or organisations wishing to be considered for the funds do have to meet a number of requirements. For instance three to five partners will have to be found in other EU-countries and plans should be ready by April 1, 2009. And moreover reams of paper have to be filled in before, during and after the project - as is customary in EU-projects.
