Hospitals quite often suffer parking problems. Erasmus Medisch Centrum in Rotterdam is solving this by paying staff a kilometre allowance of € 0,10 for not travelling by car but by bicycle or public transport.

Car use by staff fell, as a result of this policy, from approximately 45 to 20 - 25 per cent. Sint-Vincentiusziekenhuis in Antwerp had another approach. By providing a free season ticket for public transport company De Lijn the number of staff using public transport has more than doubled (from 130 to 300 commuters) and numbers keep growing. Almost 1 in 3 now reaches the hospital by train, tram or bus. 'It is impossible to completely eradicate car use in a profession with early and late shifts', according to a hospital spokesman. Introduction of bicycle expenses prompted 180 employees (1 in 5) to take the bicycle. And employees parking at a distance from the hospital are provided with a folding bicycle.
