Through a collaboration with map maker Andes en various municipalities, hundreds of kilometres of bike pathways within Holland and Belgium have become electronically available. Amsterdam has had its entire cycling network recorded along with characteristics such as type of road surface, width, presence of posts, off-road cycle tracks, and so on. The researchers cycled through the entire city armed with GPS and other measuring apparatus in order to produce a complete ground plan of the most important cycling routes in Amsterdam. Google also uses this data and asks its users to report possible improvements. Besides, Holland already possesses detailed cycling route planners developed by the Cycling Association.
