Use of the bike is increasing rapidly in the metropolitan area. In 2011 alone, the number of cyclists increased by 5%, both on the north and on the south bank of the River Maas, and during workdays as well as on weekends. Between 2001 and 2011 bicycle use has gone up by 75% at 19 counting sites. According to the Greater Rotterdam council, this demonstrates that the investments made in the regional cycling network have borne fruit. Of the 19 counting sites, the busiest one was located on the Erasmus Bridge over the Mass in the centre of Rotterdam. On an average workday, 9300 cyclists cross the bridge.
