From May 2011 there will be 1000 Blue-bikes waiting at 40 major train station all over Belgium. This Belgian version of the Dutch OV-fiets provides train passengers with an alternative for after-rail transport, courtesy of NMBS and FIETSenWERK.

In order to rent a Blue-bike a subscription needs to be taken out by means of the website or at the ticket office of a train station. A subscription is valid for one year. The bicycle may be used for 24 hours. In the initial stages the bicycle needs to be returned to the rental location. Payment occurs subsequently by a monthly invoice.
Blue-Bike does not have the ambition of replacing or competing with urban projects (like Villo in Brussels), according to NMBS. Rather, it aims at commercial cooperation.
NMBS and FIETSenWERK – an organisation that involves sheltered workshops and job-seekers in bicycle projects – have together set up Blue-mobility company, to confirm their cooperation. Eneco, supplier of green electricity and gas, is a partner in this community project.
