Park and Bike the focal point of Green Deal

At the end of 2012 a number of organisations signed the so-called Cycling Green Deal (Green Deal Fiets) with the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment. These environmental and transportation interest groups agreed to work closely together in the development of Park and Bike programs and the construction of fast cycling lanes.

Park and Bike facility trials will be set up and experiments will be conducted with Park and Bike programs near historical city centres. Mobility brokers will bid on contracts to encourage the employees of particular companies to cycle to work. In addition, under the Green Deal a lot of attention will be devoted to the construction of fast cycling lanes. Criteria and guidelines for their construction will be drawn up by the governmental agency for road standards. In turn, the organisations will promote commuting by bicycle by improving the direction signs. Moreover, ways to clearly indicate commuting routes will be examined in cooperation with the Industrial Design section of the Technical University of Delft. The intention is to conduct one or more pilots in order to arrive at a preferred approach to signage and naming. Finally, an effort will be made to have electric lease bicycles available; the interest groups will promote the idea among car leasing companies to make electric bicycles part of their arrangements. The call is for “more than 4 wheel packages” in which the lease car deal includes an electric bike.
