The electronic rental bicycle conquers the US, too. Washington is the first American town to introduce a rental system along the lines known in Europe from Barcelona and Paris.

As a first step 10 stands have been placed in Washington to accommodate 129 circulating bicycles. Whereas rates in Europe are generally based on usage, there will be a fixed rate of 40 dollars in the United States for a year’s subscription. This allows a maximum of three hours of bicycle use. The system has been introduced by Clear Channel Outdoor, one of the major players (together with its competitor JC Decaux) on the bicycle rental market. Both companies strike deals with local authorities to place rental bicycles in exchange for advertising space at bus stops and other outdoor locations. Washington has more plans to promote cycling. The number of miles of bicycle lanes will be increased to 39 miles. An additional 100 bicycle stands will be placed and road education projects will pay attention to cycling.
