TU Delft is currently conducting a feasibility study into the BIMI (BIcyclette Movement Individuel), an extremely high-tech bike rental system allowing the bicycle to be left and rented anywhere.

Each BIMI is to be provided with integrated electronics for payment, location information, data communication, energy generation and energy storage. A central computer will continuously record the whereabouts of each BIMI. The general outlines of the system are ready, but some technical problems still need to be solved, for instance how to locate a bicycle inside a tunnel. The aim is to start the project in Delft, with a possible expansion to the other large cities in the same region.
