Bicycles taking up room but never being used - abandoned bicycles - constitute a major problem at many train stations. This may be effectively solved and is an excellent way to solve capacity problems.

  • Only rarely are wrongly parked bicycles systematically removed, for obvious reasons. It could be assumed, for equally obvious reasons, that abandoned bicycles would be treated much more harshly. After all, it has been known for years that at major train stations some 20% of the parking capacity is taken up by abandoned bicycles. Lately Groen Licht Verkeersadviezen has confirmed this once again by counting parking duration. Nevertheless abandoned bicycle actions are most certainly not an everyday occurrence. Of course this is for a reason; a good approach does have several impediments. But several methods are possible and the known impediments prove to be surmountable after all. This article focuses on three useful methods.
