BikeNet Houten: a new system for direction signs for cyclists

In June, the town of Houten implemented a new system of directional signs for cyclists. The system finds its inspiration in subway (metro) maps.

Using eight easily recognisable routes, cyclists can find their way more easily. Each route has its own colour and number. Routes are indicated on the map by coloured lines.

Houten and the Cyclists’ Union received regular requests for a critical assessment of the direction signs for cyclists. The town boasts a great number of attractive, wide bike paths on red tarmac, which makes it difficult for cyclists to keep the paths apart and to find their way in Houten. Cyclists also commented that it was difficult to find the way to the different neighbourhoods. To solve this problem, the town and the Cyclists’s Union joined forces and came up with the new direction system: BikeNet Houten.
