In Bordeaux, France, a new rental bike project has been launched. It is mainly remarkable for the complete integration of the system into local public transport.

The system is called V3 or Vcub(e), meaning Vélos de la Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux (bicycles for the Bordeaux urban community). Overall more than 1500 bicycles will be positioned at over 139 stations, nearly all of which located at public transport transfer points. Within the town distribution points are always at most 300 metres apart, outside the town there are another 40 distribution points. Some of the bicycles are reserved for users taking the bicycle home and returning it the next morning. The bikes can be hired by means of a credit card or the special regional public transport card, provided with a RFID-chip. The system is an initiative of local authorities and the regional public transport company. As such, it is therefore not funded – as most other systems in France – by advertising revenue.
