What happens when high levels of cycling increase even more? Based on 10 years of research Fietsersbond finds problems and possible solutions. In particular bicycle parking and traffic safety require lots of attention over the coming legislative period.

  • Increased bicycle use and improved traffic safety for cyclists are only possible if there is more room for all those bicycles. On connector roads that room will be hard to find. It is better to disentangle main cycling routes and connector roads as much as possible. In existing urban areas solutions with separate bike paths comparable to Houten or Almere are usually not or no longer possible. But main cycling routes may be constructed through residential areas. By deciding on the construction of bicycle streets priority may be regulated in favour of cyclists, as well as a high level of design be obtained. In particular circulation measures, but also speed reductors will be required to minimise the dangers of motor vehicles, allowing even children and the elderly to cycle safely and comfortably. In addition connector roads with many cyclists should actively be designed Sustainably Safe, with wide bike paths. Ensuring the presence of enough bicycle parking stands with a good provision for fixing a bike, as an anti-theft measure, at major bicycle destinations will require considerable investments. Particularly at train stations and in town centres the task is complex. Creative bicycle-friendly solutions are necessary to meet the needs and entice cyclists to display desired behaviour. Bicycle parking should grow into a mature field of policy with a professional approach.
