Evaluation of Fietsberaad by XTNT, on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works.

  • Fietsberaad plays a useful part in the dissemination of knowledge in the field of cycling policy. Fietsberaad should therefore by all means continue its activities. The results of an evaluation on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works.

Fietsberaad was established in 2001 by the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works.
At the start it was agreed the activities of Fietsberaad would be evaluated in 2005. To that end bureau XTNT interviewed dozens of representatives of the various target groups, e.g. local and provincial civil servants and politicians and consultants.

Fietsberaad emerges as a ‘reliable and professional organisation with expertise and a wide-ranging vision', according to the evaluation. The various products score highly as well, most of all the magazine Fietsverkeer, widely read and highly appreciated. Three quarters of all policymakers uses the magazine as a source of useful information. The meetings of Fietsberaad also meet a need for content. And the reports are also greatly appreciated on all points, as does the website.
The Kennisbank file on the website could do with some improvement, feel some respondents, while at the same time quite a number of policymakers do not yet appear to have discovered this source of information.

Particularly intermediate and large towns, provinces, regions and water boards feel the products and services provide them with worthwhile assistance in preparing policy and in the official and political decision process, according to the XTNT report. By no means all administrators turn out to be aware of the existence of Fietsberaad, despite the fact that a great many of them receive the magazine Fietsverkeer.
'There are clear signals from all target groups concerned that Fietsberaad should continue to exist', is the final conclusion of the report. 'Respondents feel the need for an organisation disseminating knowledge in the field of cycling policy and continuing to demand attention for cycling policy'.
