The report in which the structure of the Explanatory Model is explained; the model that explains differences in bicycle use between municipalities based on 11 factors. [Research for Policy - 2006]

  • On behalf of the Fietsberaad, Research voor Beleid (Research for Policy) has studied the differences in bicycle use between municipalities. This was aimed at developing an explanatory model for bicycle use with the strongest possible explanatory power. This model also had to be relevant in terms of policy, in the sense that it can be used to determine the effect of policy on bicycle use.
Among the bicycle and traffic policy factors, car costs appear to be significant; the higher the costs of parking, the higher the bicycle use. Furthermore Bus, Tram and Metro journeys had a strong impact, as did travel-time ratio bicycle-car.
