  • A sustainably safe road environment requires bicycle facilities which separate motor traffic from relatively vulnerable traffic participants such as cyclists and scooter/moped riders. Research has shown that area access roads with adjacent or separate cycle paths are safer than roads without bicycle provisions. On crossroads, supplementary measures such as priority regulations and traffic slowing provisions successfully reduce the number of traffic accidents. Because a total separation between the various traffic participants is not always feasible in a sustainably safe road environment, conflict situations and thus accidents can never be excluded.
