The same applies to the number of fatal crashes involving cyclists and drivers or passengers of mopeds and ‘snorfietsen’ (mopeds with a maximum speed of 25 km per hour). These figures are from the CBS (Central Bureau of Statistics) and Rijkswaterstaat (part of the Ministry for Infrastructure and Environment). The number of fatal bike crashes remained virtually unchanged. 185 cyclists died in 2014, of whom 106 were 65 or older. The number of pedestrians killed fell to 49 in 2014, compared to 56 in the year before.

The majority of fatal traffic accidents occurs on local roads: 62% of all police-registered fatalities. 22% of registered traffic fatalities occurred on provincial roads, while 3% occurred on roads managed by a water authority. The sharpest fall in the number of registered fatal traffic accidents occurred on roads with speed limits of 30 or 50 km per hour, the numbers falling by 43% and 17% respectively.
