The Netherlands must not be seen as a ‘bicycle paradise’. In the Netherlands, bicycle use is viewed very functionally and equally as another means of transport which should be facilitated. Egalitarian principles and economic conditions play a big role in the Netherlands, as do successful bicycle policy and bicycle design. At the same time, the Netherlands is a laboratory in which many concepts, arguments, designs and policy instruments relating to bicycle use are tested by a wide group of experts. This is an ongoing process whose relevance to others is not so much down to possible standard solutions, but more as ‘experiences’ – co-determined by all the environmental factors specific to the Netherlands.
