Empirical studies at train stations show the percentage of misplaced bicycles, and consequently shortages in bicycle parking capacity, may be reduced by removing unused bicycles.

  • Misplaced and unused bicycles needlessly take up space at train stations. At nine central stations the percentage of misplaced bicycles is on average 7% and that of unused bicycles on average 15%. The conclusion is justified that if the unused bicycles were not present, all nine train stations would have enough unguarded bicycle parking facilities and the environment would look much tidier.
