New generation rental bikes without docking stations

Whereas current rental bike systems still need a special facility where the bicycles are parked and recorded, this may well be redundant in future. At least OPENbike can do without these facilities. This concept won the competition for a new rental bike system held by Copenhagen local authorities.

The system is no longer dependent on facilities at specific locations, but may be applied anywhere in a town. Although the judges’ report does not provide particulars, it appears to operate on the basis of a built-in GPS and GSM system, which allows tracking of all bicycle movements.
The design of the bicycle received the judges’ praise as well. Slightly retro, with references to the white ‘sixties-bicycles in Amsterdam and the cycling history of Copenhagen itself. It has, moreover, a high degree of user-friendliness.
If a definite decision is made in favour of the concept, it will need further elaboration, however.
