This document contains two articles, both about people’s fear of having their bicycles stolen. The Fietsersbond cyclists’ association feels that stronger measures should be taken to tackle bicycle theft. Bicycle manufacturers could contribute to this by mounting good locks on new bicycles and ensuring that bicycles have their own unique, easily readable frame number.
Municipalities and the police could also do much more to prevent bicycle theft. Municipalities which are currently working hard in this field are Harderwijk, with its use of the civic guard to trace stolen bicycles and Amsterdam with its integral approach to bicycle theft. The government must also do more: the long promised national register for stolen bicycles must be implemented by all police corps as soon as possible.
