In May 2001, MuConsult presented the report Monitoring bicycle policy 1996-1999 on behalf of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. This report analysed both the development of bicycle policy as well as bicycle use. This article presents some interesting figures from that report, including figures relating to the number of journeys by bicycle over distance classes and all journeys according to distance class. These show that the trend of increasingly longer journeys seems to be coming to an end. The number of journeys longer than 7.5 km, which is generally felt to be too far to cycle, is no longer increasing.
