  • A number of organisations are responsible for bicycle routes to the beach and for the facilities to park near the beach: from local authorities to tourist information office, forest service to recreational councils. It is a matter of conjecture whether they actually pay any strategic attention to this subject at all. This article outlines the situation in four Dutch coastal towns: Dishoek, Terschelling, Callantsoog and Scheveningen. Four coastal towns, four different situations. Large numbers of beachgoers turn out to travel by bicycle. Some days the supply of bicycles exceeds the supply of bicycle parking places. Some measures are taken to reduce this discrepancy, but more ad hoc than as a matter of policy. This is probably caused in part because problems usually occur on a limited number of days only. And maybe also due to the fact that cyclists do not file complaints with the authorities involved.
