The results of a study by MuConsult mainly show that little has changed in our mobility: individually we do not travel more often in 2000 than we did in 1991 and journey distances have not increased significantly. This result seems ‘dull’. However, many people will be surprised to learn that we have not become more mobile, although we use the car more often, particularly for long commuter journeys; a question of economy and economics. The traffic situation continues to feature in the headlines: ‘Big increase in car traffic, more congestion’. And what about the bicycle? We still love our bicycles. MuConsult calculated that changes in age, employment, ‘dilution’ of households, car ownership and suburbanisation should ‘actually’ have led to a 5.6% reduction in bicycle use. Yet the fact that bicycle use continues to hold its own must be seen as a victory.
