'A delight to cycle here’

The town of Venlo focuses its bicycle policies on the construction of a backbone: a super-quality central cycling route.

  • Local authorities all aim for a connected network of bicycle routes, with or without different levels in scale. Delft, for instance, employs a classical three-level distinction. Veenendaal emphasises a dense network of equivalent routes. Venlo has yet another approach. The Venlo bicycle plan for the years to come distinguishes beside (or above) primary and secondary cycling routes a “backbone”. At the backbone the large bicycle streams of various origins and major destinations meet. The quality for the cyclists here is of the highest level: direct, no traffic lights, priority or - in case of major car arteries - multi-level crossings, enough room (3.5 - 4.0 m) and comfortable (even, wide and smooth).
