Bicycles in a disadvantaged neighbourhood require more than a decent cycling route, according to the entries for the ideas competition De fietsvriendelijke wijk. A survey of the winners.

  • Make a design for one of forty disadvantaged neighbourhoods to ensure the bicycle is the most logical means of transportation. That was the essence of the ideas competition De fietsvriendelijke wijk (the bike-friendly neighbourhood) of Fietsersbond. First prize for professionals was awarded to Posad, a young urban planning firm from Den Haag, that made a design for the Rotterdam neighbourhood of Pendrecht. Among other ideas they invented the Brik, a small parking facility for 20 to 30 bicycles that may be combined with for instance a greengrocer’s or newspaper stand. The second prize for professionals was awarded to Bike to skool, focussing on cycling education. This entry for the Dordrecht neighbourhood of Wielwijk-Crabbehof, by Dordrecht local authorities in cooperation with Lola Landscape Architects, aims to teach all children how to cycle. First prize for students was awarded to Dwalen door Den Haag, a design that is actually more of a method. Four architecture students from Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Arnhem got on their bicycles in the Den Haag neighbourhood of Schilderswijk and recorded the locations where cyclists might enjoy riding. In the second-prize design Velocity by Anne-Sietske Verburg and Rens Wijnakker, landscape architecture students of Wageningen University, a lot of attention is paid to social safety.
