More traffic conflicts occur on narrower cycling paths than on wider ones according to the conclusions reached by a TNO study commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. Within the city, a 2.5 metre width is a safe standard whilst outside the city, a 4.0 metre width is the safe standard for two-way traffic.
